Building a strong foundation to support further learning and foster an early love of Shakespeare’s plays
Specially designed workshops for learners in years 7, 8 and 9 to explore storytelling and theatre through the lens of both English Literature and Drama and the Expressive Arts
Drama and Expressive Arts
We believe that every single person on the planet has the potential to be a great actor, so let’s start early!
Each workshop covers:
- Confidence building warm-up games that are used in professional theatre rehearsals
- Speaking the words and lines of Shakespeare’s plays, focussing on rhythm, pace, rhyme and meaning
- Building on performance and public speaking skills with both Shakespearean and modern scripts
- Expanding knowledge of historical contexts, both social and cultural, to inform creative choices
- Interpersonal relationships between characters and empathetic readings of the scenes
- Team-building exercises to improve friendships and foster a positive working relationship in class
- Every learner will be given a speaking role and a chance to play an exciting, dramatic character – an opportunity to relish!
English Literature
We’re on hand to help learners get to grips with Shakespeare and examining literary devices. These introductory sessions can be tailored to any level required and are fully accessible. We know that great GCSE and A-Level results begin with a strong foundation, so our workshops aim to:
- Cover the plot of the play and how each event is presented to the audience
- Encourage learners to review the characters and events of the play and form their own opinions on them
- Explore the characters and their wants, needs and personalities, along with their relationships and how they affect the story
- Support learners in finding evidence within the text to support their opinions and points
- Introduce learners to literary devices in action, including Shakespeare’s use of prose and verse, iambic pentameter, rhyme, repetition and form to showcase characters’ personalities, status and emotions
- Help learners build their confidence in researching unfamiliar words and phrases, as well as historical and cultural contexts
